Everything below is free. It is ordered by how fast you can get it — beginning with 57 things that ask for nothing at all.

  1. Nothing at all

    Right now

You need: Nothing. No card, no signup, no appointment.

You get: 57 museums, pools, parks, and programs

    1. Pick somewhere from the no-ID list.
    2. Go. That is the whole process.
  2. An ID you already carry

    Today

You need: Any driver's license or state ID from New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut.

You get: Pay-what-you-wish admission at 12 major museums

    1. Go to the admissions desk — not the online ticket page, which will charge full price.
    2. Say you are a New York State resident and would like pay-what-you-wish.
    3. Show your ID and pay what you decide, including the minimum if that is what you have.

This is a residency policy, not a discount. You do not need to explain or qualify for it.

  3. A digital library card

    Minutes, online

You need: Live, work, attend school, or pay property taxes in New York State. Age 13+ at NYPL.

You get: E-books, audiobooks, film streaming, newspapers, and research databases

    1. Apply online at your system: NYPL (Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island), BPL (Brooklyn), or QPL (Queens).
    2. Your address is verified automatically. The card is issued immediately.
    3. Sign in and start borrowing.

A digital card does not include Culture Pass. For that you need the physical card in step 4.

  4. A physical library card

    One branch visit

You need: Same eligibility as above. Bring proof of ID and address; teens 13–17 need no ID.

You get: Culture Pass — free passes to 109 museums and cultural venues

    1. Apply online first, then visit any branch to verify and collect the card.
    2. Or apply in person at a branch with proof of ID and address.
    3. Reserve passes at culturepass.nyc using your card number.

You can hold cards from all three systems at once, which widens what you can reserve.

  5. IDNYC

One appointment, or a walk-in day

You need: Any New York City resident age 10 or older, regardless of immigration status. Free.

You get: 90+ benefits, including free one-year memberships at museums

    1. Gather 3 points of identity documents plus 1 proof of NYC address.
    2. Use a walk-in location on its weekday, or book an appointment — released Fridays for the following week.
    3. Apply in person and receive the card by mail.

Immigration status is not asked and not recorded as a condition of eligibility.

You can hold all of these at once. Nothing here rules anything else out, and none of it costs money.
